CREW requests FBI records on Giuliani leak investigation
New records obtained by CREW show that there was an investigation into unauthorized Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) leaks about the Clinton Foundation to the public. CREW has requested records on the leak investigation, since these documents could shed light on whether the government sought to influence the 2016 presidential election or violated other federal law in its handling of the investigation.
In 2018, CREW sought information about Trump’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani’s communications with the FBI and the FBI refused to give any responsive reply. However, following CREW’s review of records released from another lawsuit, we found evidence of an FBI investigation into the leak. The documents indicate that then-FBI Director James Comey was investigating “media stories,” which at the time were most likely referencing Giuliani’s interviews with the media where he indicated getting leaked information from the FBI on the Clinton Foundation.
CREW has requested FBI documents on copies of all records of the leak investigation from July 4, 2016 to present.
Any leaks could have possibly been an attempt to influence the election which could violate the Hatch Act and any leaks to the media about ongoing investigations would also be a violation of the Privacy Act. The public deserves to know what came out of the investigations and why they ended.
