CREW requests DOJ records on Giuliani Ukraine investigations
Former-President Trump’s “personal lawyer” Rudy Giuliani has continued to avoid accountability for spreading disinformation about the 2020 election and the public deserves answers around his actions. Giuliani’s communications with Ukrainian officials were highly suspect, and some appeared to align with Trump’s efforts to use Ukrainian officials to gain a political advantage in the election, for which Trump was impeached in December 2019.
While both the FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York launched investigations into Giuliani, search warrants in both were quashed by then-Attorney General Bill Barr’s DOJ. The DOJ first told prosecutors that the investigations were too close to the 2020 elections and had the potential to alter results, and then later when prosecutors refiled, that because election results were being disputed in several states the investigations could not continue. If Barr was politicizing the DOJ and using it to protect Trump and his allies, then the public deserves to know.
CREW has requested DOJ records on the investigations into Rudy Giuliani, including any subpoenas or warrants from the FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office for the SDNY.
The records will shed light on Giuliani’s activities in Ukraine and reveal if he illegally lobbied the Trump Administration on behalf of the Ukrainian government to attempt to alter the outcome of the 2020 Presidential election. Barr routinely protected Trump and his allies from scrutiny and his abuses of power were only addressed by a change in administration. Now, there is an opportunity for a fuller picture to emerge around DOJ’s interference in these investigations and paths forward to hold Giuliani accountable for potentially illegal actions.
