CREW requests unredacted Secret Service reports on Turnberry trip
Update: CREW has appealed the initial determination by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s (“DHS”) Office of Inspector General with respect to the FOIA below for improperly asserting FOIA Exemptions 7(E) and 7(F) to withhold certain costs incurred by the Secret Service for President Trump’s visit to his own resort. Read the appeal here.
Learn MoreThe American people deserve to know how much taxpayer money is going to the president’s businesses.
On March 18, 2020, the DHS Office of Inspector General (OIG) issued a report on the U.S. Secret Service expenses at Trump’s Turnberry Resort in Scotland. The report, requested by Congress and now publicly available, blocked out key costs to the Secret Service for the trip. The total cost of meals and incidentals, certain hotel room rates for personnel, and other logistical support costs are all redacted, which prevents the public from knowing the full extent to which President Trump is using taxpayer money to promote his business interests
CREW has requested an unredacted copy of the OIG report on the expenses the Secret Service incurred for Trump’s Turnberry trip.
Trump’s stay at his Turnberry property and these Secret Service expenses were directly motivated by the president’s own business interests, which he has refused to divest from. The requested records will shed light on the extent to which federal funds are being used to benefit the president’s properties and line his own pockets.
